What is Somatic Consciousness?
I’m glad you asked.
Soma (from Greek) means “of the body”.
Somatic Consciousness is the consciousness of the BODY.
The Body has a consciousness through every cell, the programming of your genes and dna. Every action that we take and the choices we make that create that action create a consciousness that makes us feel a certain way in our body. The more you do the same action or choose the same choices, the more you reinforce the same behavior. So bringing awareness to the consciousness created and felt in our body, we bring awareness to the patterns, habits and beliefs that we carry in our bodies.
Two other phrases to explain Somatic Consciousness is Body Awareness and Body Consciousness.
The first step to Body Awareness is to create a place of NON-JUDGMENT, where you begin to listen and feel your body.
The feelings of your body are comprised of two things, EMOTIONS and SENSATIONS.
Emotions are not judgments, they are interpretations of the sensations you feel.
Emotions can be judged as bad or good, but this is not helpful. It’s important to understand the emotion and discover what made you feel that way. Body Consciousness allows you to pay attention to the sensations in your body so you can name the emotion. Rather than judging the emotion or feeling as good or bad, try to understand what may have caused you to feel that way. This understanding is what breeds higher states of awareness and higher forms of consciousness.
